Let’s face it, there are many folks in families who will be popping a Valium or other drugs to get through the Holidays . Oh, yes. In honor of these brave family members, I have written a new parody to the tune of the hit song, We are Family, by Sister Sledge. The dysfunctional family Thanksgiving 2013 may need a song. Here is a snippet of the chorus:
We are Family
We live dysfunctionally…We are family…Everybody needs therapy…..
I imagine the first Thanksgiving was not that pleasant. I bet some of those sistah Pilgrims were mad at their husbands for dragging them across the big pond. I bet they threatened to swim back to England many times. “Oh, really!” said the hormonal sistah Pilgrim. “I’ll show you and sail that Mayflower right back home. Momma told me to marry that cute English butcher.” Maybe this is why turkey is such a tradition to be consumed at Thanksgiving since it has a chemical in the meat that puts you to sleep. The Pilgrims actually were pre-yankees and if I-95S had been invented, they would have hit the road….. bound for Dade County.
A Yankee friend mind commented how scary his own kind are. His comment was, “If you travel on I-95S and happened to get behind a snow-buzzard (formally a snowbird), all you see is a big Cadillac being driven by an old woman who looks as if she has no head with long, old arms wearing big diamonds. Her husband is asleep on the passenger side with their old Shih Tzu in his lap.
In my book, “Bury Me with My Pearls,” I talk about finding the funny in dysfunction. #pearlsbook Dysfunction is not fun, but you can get some funny out of it.
Many people and circumstances cannot be changed but it you can find some levity in the situation, it can lighten the load and help you laugh it off. Humor is magical and helps lower stress levels and gives your immune system a boost.
So gobble up some turkey, be thankful for all things and laugh.
